An ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) assessment determines whether the child or adult client meets the diagnostic criteria for an ASD diagnosis.
For children, the ASD assessment consists of two phases: (1) obtaining background information about the child from their parents / carers via a diagnostic interview; and (2) the child is assessed for ASD using a diagnostic tool that consists of puzzles, books, toys etc. This child's cognitive ability is also assessed at this time as their cognitive status forms part of the ASD diagnosis.
We use Gold Standard psychometric assessments that include the Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised (ADI-R); Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale - 2nd Ed. (ADOS-2); and the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System - 3rd Ed. (ABAS-3).
After administering the ASD assessment, the assessing Psychologist will put all of the information obtained into a comprehensive report on all findings from the assessment.
Please note that all assessment reports from Autism Canberra Psychology Centre are suitable for use with NDIS and / or Centrelink applications, as the completed ASD assessment report and any subsequent diagnoses will be confirmed and signed off by our lead Clinical Psychologist, Jenny Lewis.

Firstly, we need someone who knew the adult when they were growing up – in the early developmental period (approx. 0-16 years). This person is preferably a parent, but can sometimes be a sibling, aunt/uncle, however, it can NOT be a spouse.
As ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a developmental condition, and first evident during this period, we need that information to assist in the assessment and subsequent diagnosis of ASD, should an ASD diagnosis exist for the adult.
Then, we conduct the second part of the ASD assessment, directly with the adult client.
Each of these assessment components must be completed in order to assess an adult for ASD.

A psychoeducational assessment is primarily for children, to assess if the child is experiencing any learning difficulty (e.g., dyslexia), or any form of ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). This assessment also assesses the child's cognitive ability as this is often required for some psychological diagnoses. We are also able to assess for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) at this time, if the parents wish.
We use Gold Standard psychometric assessments that include Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V); Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-II); the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (ABAS); and the Conners' 4 Rating Scales for AD/HD, conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
